Expert Alert: Bentley University Professor Explores Ethics Behind Charging Consumers Different Amounts for the Same Product

Price discrimination happens all the time. Did you know, for instance, the discounts offered on a number of services to seniors and children are a form of price discrimination? As a society, we view this as acceptable, but not all forms of price discrimination are as tolerable.

How would you feel knowing that a product you bought from Amazon in one zip code was sold at a different price to someone in a different zip code? Upset? Probably. Is it legal? Technically. But, is it ethical? That’s what Jeff Moriarty, associate professor of philosophy and expert in business ethics at Bentley University is trying to determine.

Professor Moriarty can discuss:

  •        The ethics behind price discrimination
  •        How consumers can avoid becoming “victims” of price discrimination
  •        The difference between “accepted” and “deceptive” forms of price discrimination in society
