Bentley Expert Available to Comment on the Future of Cars
Detroit automakers and Silicon Valley are scrambling to be the leader in next-generation mobility. From GM’s partnership with Lyft to recent announcements about self-driving cars from Google, Apple and Tesla, the industry is changing quickly to adapt to the future.
Dr. Fred Ledley, founding director of the Center for the Integration of Science and Industry, is available to comment on the dynamic future of cars and how Silicon Valley and Detroit can differentiate themselves. He can discuss what the auto-future holds, including what we can expect to see and when. Some initial thoughts from Dr. Ledley include:
“The battle brewing between Detroit and Silicon Valley is not simply a struggle between corporate behemoths, it is about the very nature of the ‘value’ in an automobile. Historically, the value is in the ability to design, manufacture, distribute, and service automobiles - the classic strengths of Detroit’s automobile industry. Increasingly, the ‘value’ in the automobile resides in the information technologies.”
“In today’s auto industry, design is more often ceded to engineers focused on safety and efficiency, manufacturing is becoming a global commodity business, and distribution is increasingly web-centered. Moreover, electric cars require only a fraction of the service required by internal combustion engines. It is clear that the traditional strengths of the automobile industry may not be relevant in this new battle.”
“The emergence and success of self-driving, driverless cars is inevitable. There will certainly be accidents, controversies, and litigation, but ultimately self-driving cars will come to be seen as an enabling, life-improving technology that actually reduces the risk and stress of driving.”
