Charge to the Presidential Search Committee

The board of trustees of Bentley University appreciates the presidential search committee’s willingness to undertake the important work that will lead to the appointment of the 9th president of Bentley University. The following charge outlines the board’s expectations with respect to the search process, confidentiality expected of the committee, and the authority granted to the search committee:


1. The search committee shall be comprised of six trustees, four faculty members, two university’s staff, one undergraduate student, one graduate student, and one member of the global alumni board. Members are appointed by the chair of the board of trustees. The search committee will be chaired by trustee Nickolas Stavropoulos.


2. The search committee will adopt a timetable for the search that will permit the appointment of a president in the Spring of 2021.


3. The search committee will utilize the search firm of Isaacson, Miller as interviewed and selected by the executive committee of the board to conduct a proactive national search to attract highly qualified candidates.


4. It is expected the committee will make a special effort to generate a diverse applicant pool.


5. Before beginning the search, the committee will conduct an analysis of Bentley’s future needs and opportunities and formulate a position statement based on the analysis. The analysis will be informed by listening sessions held with various community constituents. This position profile should be presented to the board for approval and include:
a) a summary of the mission, history and accomplishments of the university;
b) an overview of the agenda the university must address in the next three to five years; and
c) translates university challenges into the skills and experiences a president will need to successfully advance that agenda.


6. The search committee will make periodic reports to members of the Bentley community and to the board about the progress of the search.


7. The search committee will observe strict confidentiality in the conduct of the search and following the completion of the search. Committee members will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement prior to the start of the search. Any member of the search committee who breaches confidentiality may be removed from the committee without replacement.


8. The search committee will meet with the board after on-campus interviews with finalists to recount its work and to provide the board with comments regarding strengths and concerns for each of the finalists interviewed.


9. Pursuant to the by-laws, it is the responsibility of the board of trustees to select the candidate to serve as president of the university.
