For Faculty

If a student has requested academic accommodations, you are under no legal obligation to provide them without an official academic accommodation plan provided by Disability Services. Until you receive this plan, it is not appropriate to provide the requested accommodations. If a student has not registered, refer them to Disability Services to complete the registration process.

To familiarize students with the process of receiving accommodations, you should include a statement in your syllabus informing them that they must meet with Disability Services and receive an official academic accommodation plan at the beginning of each semester.

If you feel a student would benefit from our services, please feel free to refer the student to our office for a consultation.

You are encouraged to include the following statement in your syllabus:

Bentley University abides by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 which stipulate no student shall be denied the benefits of an education solely by reason of a disability. If you have a hidden or visible disability which may require classroom accommodations please make an appointment within the first four weeks of the semester. Disability Services (781.891.2004) is located within the Office of Academic Services, Jennison Hall 336. Disability Services is responsible for managing accommodations and services for students with disabilities.

Exam accommodations

Students who request exam accommodations are instructed to maintain good communication with their professors, which may entail beginning the exam before class, finishing the exam after class, or completing the exam on a different time of day. This is to be negotiated between the student you. The student must make the request in a timely manner (at least one week in advance of the scheduled exam) and they are informed that next-day or same-day requests may not be honored.

Test Room

Students registered with our office can inquire about using the test room only if they are unable to work out exam accommodations with their instructor. Due to high demand during peak times (midterms, finals etc) space in the test room cannot always be guaranteed.

  • To request space in the test room:
    • the student and instructor complete a Test Room Request Form
      • forms must be received 48 hours in advance
    • a hard copy of the exam must be delivered at least 24 hours in advance of the exam
    • the student must confirm that arrangements have been made and agreed upon by all parties

Note-Sharer Accommodations

Pairing a student with a note-sharer may be part of an accommodation plan if we determine that a student registered with our office has a disability that interferes with their capacity to take notes. Although the student and the note-sharer are responsible for completing the necessary paperwork you may be asked to assist in this process by making the class aware of the need for a note-sharer. In doing so, it is requested that you do not disclose the student’s name. It is the responsibility of the note-sharer and the student receiving this accommodation to make arrangements for the remainder of the semester.

The student receiving the accommodation must attend all classes to receive notes.

Grading and Evaluations

Students with disabilities should not be evaluated or graded differently than other students in the class. Academic accommodations are not provided to give a student an advantage or to raise or lower academic expectations. Rather, accommodations are designed to “level the playing field” and allow the student to demonstrate mastery of the course material. Academic accommodations may provide an alternative manner in which a student has access to course information. All students, including those with disabilities, should be evaluated at the same level.

Universal Design

If you are struggling to reach students of various learning styles in your classroom, there is something you can do about it. A growing trend in college curriculum is universal design, which helps all students get the most out of their education. We are available to work individually with you or provide group workshops on how to integrate universal design into existing and new syllabi.
