Commencement Planning

As part of our planning and yours, it is imperative that we all understand and remember that a commencement on campus is our intention and hope. We will do everything in our power at Bentley to make this event possible. But, as we know too well these days, it’s very difficult amid a pandemic to guarantee our plans too far in advance. While Massachusetts has slowly lifted restrictions, Governor Charlie Baker’s reopening plan creates a firm barrier between moving from our current Phase 3 (“Vigilant”) to Phase 4 (“New Normal”): the development of a vaccine and/or therapy for COVID-19. Under Massachusetts’ current Phase 3 guidelines, it would be very difficult to hold a traditional commencement ceremony with 7,000+ students, family members, friends, faculty and staff in close proximity under one tent. Therefore, we encourage graduates and their families to make tentative, refundable arrangements for Commencement 2021.

The science and data we see in the months ahead, as well as evolving state and federal guidelines, will guide our thinking and decision-making in the year ahead. We are hopeful that the world continues to make progress in mitigating COVID-19 and that a traditional commencement will be possible.
