Before Thanksgiving, University Police Spare a Turkey

As the Bentley community prepared to celebrate Thanksgiving and a restful break, many had turkey on the mind. But for some in University Police and Facilities, dealing with a turkey came a few days earlier than expected — and with feathers still intact. Just a few days before the holiday, University Police Sergeant Kevin Michaud answered a call about an unwanted visitor discovered roaming the halls in Adamian by a Facilities team member. Acting quickly, the Facilities team member managed to usher the turkey into a conference room to prevent it from exploring the building or finding its way into a classroom in use.

When Sergeant Michaud arrived, he opened the conference room to find the clearly stressed-out turkey flying around in an attempt to escape through a window. As the turkey kicked up feathers across the room, Officer Carlos Camacho arrived to back up Sergeant Michaud in his effort to safely extract the bird from the building. Together, they covered the turkey with a jacket to protect it and themselves and safely escorted the campus guest back to safety outside.

It's unclear if the turkey was trying to sit in on Principles of Microeconomics or replace the falcon as our mascot, or if it knew Thanksgiving was around the corner and was trying to lie low until the holiday passed. But no matter its motivation, we're thankful to the Facilities team, Sergeant Michaud and Officer Camacho for their quick work to make sure the turkey was quickly apprehended and returned to its natural habitat — roaming around Bentley's parking lots.

How will companies attract GenZ workers?
Bentley partners with the Boston Globe for an online panel

people sitting at an office table On Monday, Dec. 12 from noon to 1:00 p.m., Bentley will partner with the Boston Globe to host an online panel with workforce experts and Boston-area executives about how companies should recruit the next generation of workers. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Paul Tesluk will kick off the livestream, followed by a conversation with Director of Workforce Development for the City of Boston Trinh Nguyen, Co-founder and CEO of Paperless Parts Jason Ray, and Managing Partner of Keystone Partners Elaine Varelas moderated by Diti Kohli, business reporter for the Boston Globe.

The panel is a continuation of Bentley's partnership with the Boston Globe to highlight the findings of the Bentley-Gallup Force for Good survey results. In October, Bentley and the Globe hosted a live event in Boston where executives from Deloitte US, Liberty Mutual Insurance and State Street joined President Chrite to discuss how Americans think business is doing when it comes to making a positive impact on society.

The annual holiday toy drive returns

University Police are excited to once again collect toys for Waltham-area children and families in their annual toy drive! First launched in 2001 to spread joy to the community after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the University Police Toy Drive has impacted countless families in need across Waltham, further strengthening Bentley’s ties with our host city.

This year, University Police are once again partnering with Athletics to collect toys during home games to ensure that members of the Bentley community can participate and help those in need.

The toy drive was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returned last year with great enthusiasm. After collecting toys from the community, University Police partners with the Waltham Police department to distribute gifts to children and families who would benefit most.

“The Bentley community has been so generous with their donations every year,” said Lieutenant Jessica Roche. “The giant bin in the lobby overflows with toys for kids from newborn to 16. Witnessing that generosity every year reminds us what an amazing community we have here at Bentley.”

University Police officers and staff regularly get involved to build community at Bentley, and the toy drive allows them to extend that effort each year to the Waltham area.

“We hear stories of the smiles and cheers of the children getting to open one of the donated gifts,” said Lieutenant Roche. “Their joy and gratitude is the reason we collect toys and the reason the Bentley community so generously gives to the drive. We are so thankful for each and every toy and for our partners’ work to make this happen annually.”

Interested in donating a gift to the toy drive? Visit University Police headquarters to deliver a gift or contact Lt. Jessica Roche to arrange pick-up for larger donations by Dec. 18.

Toys should be new, unwrapped, non-violent and suitable for ages 1-16.

Years at Bentley: Five years

Favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus is the outdoor space between LaCava and Jennison. With the great outdoor seating, tree-lined greenspace and view of the clocktower, it’s a great space to have lunch or just sit and take in the beauty of the campus.

Hobbies: When not working, some of my favorite hobbies are traveling, cooking, tending to my perennial/vegetable gardens, spending time with family and never-ending home improvements.

Favorite television show: There are too many to name. At this moment, I’m watching season five of The Crown on Netflix. The cast members are incredibly talented in each season and the cinematography and music are captivating.

Favorite animal: My favorite animal is my dog, Rosie. She is a 10-year old Shichon. They are fantastic family pets and great companions.

Best place to grab lunch on campus: One of my favorite places to grab lunch on campus is at the Faculty and Staff dining room. The hospitality from the dining services team is wonderful, the menu is always something new and different, and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with fellow colleagues. And who doesn’t love coffee and dessert after a great meal?

Hidden talent: I enjoy restoring antique garden tractors and currently own two of which I’ve done full top-to-bottom restorations. It’s incredibly rewarding to restore something old and worn out to its former glory. This is an activity that my son Ethan enjoys as well and provides me the opportunity to pass down my skills and what I’ve learned from previous generations.
