Happy Holidays from President Chrite

With the holiday season and winter break approaching, President Chrite took a moment to reflect with members of the Bentley community on his first fall semester.

Paul on campus

Keeping Watch on What's Right

Paul Cormier has been an electrician on the Facilities Maintenance team for 15 years. In his time at Bentley, he's seen the ins and outs of every building on campus. But this month, he made a discovery unlike anything he'd found before—a rare and expensive watch.

While working on campus, Paul came across the stray watch in a bathroom and believed it to be an expensive brand. After looking it up online, he confirmed that it was a very valuable watch that someone had misplaced. Paul immediately brought the watch to University Police for safekeeping in case anyone reported it missing. A few days later, a student stopped by University Police to ask if anyone had turned in the watch and was delighted to find that it had been safely recovered. The watch was a high school graduation gift and held sentimental value for the student, who was worried that it may have been lost forever.

"This is a perfect example of integrity," said Chief of Police Frank Bourgeois. "This act of kindness especially around the holidays is simply exemplary."

Nice work on having a positive impact on campus, Paul!

University Police Staff Receive Awards

Bentley's Chief of Police Frank Bourgeois has been named the winner of the Ralph Avery Leadership Development Award by the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Advancement. Each year, the award is given to a campus law enforcement and public safety leader who identifies emerging leaders and embraces the ideals of leadership development and mentorship.

In addition to Chief Bourgeois, Sergeant Travis Rixford was also recognized for his commitment to campus law enforcement and was awarded this year's Sean Collier Award for Innovations in Community-Oriented Policing. The award is named in memory of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier who was killed in the line of duty in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Bentley's University Police staff are no strangers to these awards and recognition. Last year, Lieutenant Jessica Roche received the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement's Community Service Award.

Additional All-Gender Restrooms Coming to Campus

Did you know that single-stall, all-gender restrooms can be found in many buildings on campus? These restrooms are intended to provide options and safe alternatives to multi-stall, gender-specific restrooms for students, faculty, staff and visitors who identify as transgender, gender non-binary or gender non-conforming. These restrooms are also beneficial to those accompanied by young children or those who have physical disabilities.

In support of the university's commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all members of our community, all new buildings or major renovations will now feature a single-stall, all-gender restroom that's easily accessible and identifiable.

For the fifth straight year, Bentley's student-athletes have the highest graduation rate in the nation at 99 percent, according to the latest NCAA Division II Academic Success Rate report. The Academic Success Rate represents the percentage of student-athletes who graduate within six years of initial enrollment at a college. This marks the fourth year that Bentley’s success rate was 99 percent and the eighth straight year that Bentley has achieved a rate of 97 or better.

“Bentley student-athletes are a force to be reckoned with in the classroom and beyond,” said Dean of Students Andrew Shepardson. “I’m proud of their continued commitment to excellence culminating with this national recognition for a fifth year in a row.”
