MyBackup (HP Autonomy Connected Backup)

MyBackup is an application that automatically backs up the files and folders on your computer. MyBackup also allows you to retrieve any file or folder that has been backed up in the event that the file or folder has been deleted or modified on your workstation. It will also be valuable in a hard drive failure scenario.

MyBackup Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for a myBackup account?

All full-time Faculty and Staff with a Bentley issued computer (Windows or Mac) are eligible for a myBackup account. Part-time staff and department PC's are not eligible.

How will myBackup be installed?

MyBackup is installed by Client Services when computers are prepared for delivery.  If you receive a new computer or have your computer re-imaged, myBackup will also be installed for you. If you don't believe that myBackup is installed on your computer, please contact the helpdesk.

How do I access the myBackup application?

A Connected Backup shortcut is located on your desktop as well as a Connected Backup shortcut located within the “Start/All Programs/Autonomy/” program folder.

Will a backup occur automatically on my computer?

By default, a daily backup will occur automatically on your computer.  It will occur at a random time every Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

What is a backup set?

A backup set represents all the files and folders that will be backed up on your computer. These files and folders are marked with green checkmarks in the Backup Set tab from within the myBackup application. After the initial backup, only those files and folders that have not been backed up or have changed since the last backup will be backed up. View chart.

What happens if a backup is initiated by my computer while I am at home and not connected to the Bentley network?

You may receive a “Backup Error” message if your computer tries to perform a backup while not connected to the Bentley network. The backup schedule will determine when the next backup will take place on the workstation.  Alternatively, if you have VPN access you can sign onto VPN and re-attempt the backup.

What happens if I shutdown my laptop while a backup is in progress?

The backup in progress will be canceled.  The backup schedule will determine when the next backup will be initiated on the workstation.

Is there a maximum backup size limit?

The maximum amount of data you may backup is 100 GB.

Will I know when I am nearing the maximum backup size limit?

Yes.  A warning will be displayed when your backup set reaches 90% of the 100 GB limit.  Using the Backup Set tab from within the myBackup application, you may choose some files and/or folders to exclude from your backup set to ensure the amount of data in your backup set remains below the 100 GB limit.

Will I know if I exceed the maximum backup size limit?

Yes.  A warning will be displayed when your backup set exceeds the maximum size limit of 100 GB.  Using the Backup Set tab from within the myBackup application, you will then need to select some files and/or folders to exclude from your backup set to ensure the amount of data in your backup set remains below the 100 GB limit.

Will I know if my computer fails to run an automatic backup?

Yes.  A warning will be displayed from within myBackup if there has been no successful backup in four days.

Can I open files being backed up during a scheduled backup?

Yes.  The myBackup software can back up files that are open while the backup is running as long as there is available disk space (20%) on the drive that is being backed up.  If sufficient disk space is not available, myBackup will not backup the open files. The user should contact the Bentley Help Desk if the results show that some files were not backed up.

How long will a backup take?

The initial backup may take around an hour and is dependent on the number and size of files and folders that need to be backed up on your computer. Each subsequent backup should take a few minutes, but will depend on the amount of data that has been modified or added to the computer since the last backup.

What files will not be backed up by default?

Audio, video and 'temporary' files will not be backed up by default; however, you may opt to include these files if they are used for business-related purposes.  If you are unsure if important business-related files are being backed up, please contact the helpdesk for clarification. View chart.

How long does a file or folder remain in my backup set for retrieval if I delete it from my computer?

A file or folder that is deleted from your computer will be available to be retrieved from your backup set for 60 days.

What happens if I exclude a file or folder from my backup set?

An excluded file or folder will be immediately removed from your backup set and become irretrievable.

Is my backup set protected?

Yes.  Files and folders from your backup set can only be retrieved by the owner of the account and IT support staff.  When retrieving files using the Retrieve Tab from within the myBackup application, you will be prompted to enter your network password.  In addition, all transmissions to and from the myBackup servers are encrypted.

Am I limited to using my computer in order to retrieve files and folders from my backup set?

No. Using a computer connected to the Bentley wired ADMIN network, or via VPN, you may visit https://mybackup.bentley.edu, log in using your email address and your network (Active Directory) password, and retrieve files and folders away from your computer.
