For nearly two decades, Bill VanderClock, lecturer in computer information systems, has incorporated service-learning into his courses, sponsoring nearly 1,000 students in community-based work through embedded and fourth-credit course projects. His efforts were recently recognized with the Bentley Service-Learning Center Distinguished Faculty Award.

Once again this year, tens of thousands of students around the globe will be signing the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility. Even in the face of our current economic challenges, these students are committing to consider how their work will impact our world.

In the current national debate over the value of higher education, lines are often drawn between business education and the liberal arts. Some argue that business knowledge provides the most appropriate education for today’s world; others take just the opposite approach, elevating arts and sciences as creating supple learners who can thrive in a changing environment.

Bentley Dean of Arts and Sciences Daniel L. Everett takes exception to each mindset. Everett’s beliefs are so strong that he published a book about it.

In today’s rapid-paced, digital world, global business demands that professionals stay connected and think strategically about their networks. Driven by this market need, the Center for Women and Business will host their 8th annual “Gearing Up” conference for professional women in the first decade of their careers looking to advance.

It’s one thing to be skilled at studying concepts and earning good grades. It’s another to actually use those concepts on the job. Kristine Clements ’10 MSA ’12 learned how to do both early on. Her ability to apply technical training in software such as SAP software and Excel helped her navigate an internship into a full-time position at Boston Scientific (BSC).

Bentley graduates are armed with superpowers, thanks to Bert and John Jacobs, brothers and co-founders of the Boston-based Life is good (LIG) company. The dynamic duo addressed approximately 1,000 Bentley University undergraduate students at the 94th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

The millennial generation is becoming increasingly aware of how their career choice can contribute to the broader community. Bentley freshmen explored summer internship opportunities with non-profits at an April internship fair sponsored by the Undergraduate Career Services Office. Students who participated in CDI 101, a groundbreaking career development course for first-year students, attended the program with résumés in hand, prepared to network and gain insight into opportunities.

In today’s rapidly shifting global marketplace, it is clear that businesses struggle to know their boundaries, uphold integrity, abide by government regulations and remain accountable for their actions on all fronts. To explore these practices and challenges in business ethics, Bentley will host its 9th Annual Global Business Ethics Symposium sponsored by State Street Foundation on Monday, May 20.

A team of Bentley undergraduate students headed to Captiol Hill to canvas congressional leaders about implementing a new “Energy 101” curriculum aimed at teaching basic energy principles at U.S. colleges and universities.

Bentley has continued strong efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and received two recent accolades for its sustainability practices: inclusion in The Princeton Review’s list of top environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S. and Canada, and winning the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2012-2013 College & University Green Power Challenge for using more green power than any other school in the Northeast-10 Conference.
