What Courses Matter Most in College?

Learning in unexpected places

I only remember two of the courses I took in college, and neither was in my major.

I went to college in the 1970s as a pre-medical student, and my college curriculum was dominated by courses that were pre-requisite for medical school. None of those courses matter now. By the time I began my professional career, everything I learned in those courses was obsolete, and the textbooks I used are now yellowed museum pieces in my library.

United Technologies Corporation (UTC), a global leader in high technology products for the building and aerospace industries, has committed $250,000 to sponsor Bentley University’s Honors Program. The partnership supports the university’s talent investment strategy which leverages a combination of career services, faculty, and corporate partnerships to develop student talent.

Bentley University is featured as one of the best institutions for undergraduate education in the just-published 2014 edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide, “The Best 378 Colleges”, (Random House/Princeton Review).

In one of the biggest initiatives the Bentley Service-Learning Center (BSLC) has tackled, Prospect Hill Terrace housing development will become the new home for a community center that will help the BSLC to continue to set national standards for town-gown partnerships.

It is with great sadness that we share information about the unexpected death of a member of the Bentley community. Amy Lord, a 2011 graduate, has been identified as the victim of a homicide that was reported by local media on Tuesday night, July 23. The Boston Police Department homicide unit is coordinating with the State Police and investigating the suspicious death.

Bentley Police Sgt. Carlos Echevarria and Officer Keith Holland are among 40 police officers from around the state being recognized for their success at saving lives during the past year. The Municipal Police Training Committee presented Life Saver Awards at a June ceremony at Bentley.

For the ninth consecutive year, the International Summer Institute at Bentley (ISIB) is happening from July 8 to July 28.

The entire Bentley community is mourning the loss of David LeClair ’11, who recently passed away in a tragic biking accident. A memorial service to honor and celebrate David’s life will be held on campus on Wednesday, June 19, at 4:00 p.m. in the Executive Dining Room of the LaCava Center.

High school students from across the U.S. will gather at Bentley for high-level competition as they analyze an MBA-level graduate school business case and present recommendations before panels of senior corporate executives and business school faculty.
