International Photo Contest Winners on the Moments That Moved Them
Bentley’s international photo contest is a popular annual tradition that gives student travelers a chance to share their experiences with others. Voting was held this year during International Education Week (Nov. 17 to 21), with the following winners announced on Nov. 25:
- Bentley Abroad: Michelle Catano ’26
- Exchange Students in the U.S.: Avelyn Nguyen ’29
- Landscapes: Lauren Yee ’27
- Newly Discovered Community: Richa Thapa ’26
- Falcon Favorite: Nachaka Lizubuho ’26
- Faculty/Staff Favorite: Melissa Sawyer, senior associate director and operations manager, Undergraduate Career Development
Planning the photo contest during International Education Week was intentional: It’s the first year for the university to link its long-standing CultureFest tradition with the timing of the official International Education Week occurring across university campuses nationwide.
“International Education Week is anchored in the themes of discovery, connection and celebration,” says Natalie Schlegel, MBA ’08, executive director of the Cronin Office of International Education. “We offered opportunities to explore diverse perspectives through interactive events, engaging discussions and immersive experiences. Joining together promotes sharing new cultures and ideas and, more broadly, fostering mutual understanding.”
More Students Are Studying Abroad
According to Schlegel, this year marked a significant milestone in the number of Bentley students studying abroad. Nearly half of the graduating class — 49% — participated in international programs — from semester-long experiences to faculty-led courses and graduate-level Global Business Experiences.
This year also represented a full return to pre-pandemic opportunity: for the first time since 2019, students had access to study abroad options throughout all four years of their undergraduate journey.
“Studying abroad offers more than personal and cultural growth; it’s an investment in global career development,” Schlegel says. “Recently released reports from the Forum show that graduates who study abroad gain measurable advantages in the job market. They enter a wide range of careers equipped with adaptability, communication and problem-solving skills that employers need.”
