Elevating Student Voices

Providing opportunities for student feedback and centering that feedback in decision-making is central to the operations of the Division of Student Affairs. For this reason we have developed strategies that elevate student voices and create environments where students feel heard.

Connecting the Bentley Core Values

In this work, we are guided by the Bentley Core Value of Caring, which states that we practice understanding, compassion and kindness. We recognize the whole person and their well-being, and we think beyond ourselves and our immediate goals to consider the impact our actions have on other people.

What it Means to "Feel Heard"

It is not only important for students to BE heard, but also to FEEL heard. In order for students to feel heard, we will create an environment with multiple pathways for feedback, listen with empathy and without distraction, acknowledge challenges that are brought to us, and follow up even when a solution cannot be reached.

Strategies for Elevating Student Voices

Strategy #1: Listening Sessions with Priority Groups

For the 2021-2022 academic year, the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs has identified three groups of students to connect with on a semesterly basis for a listening session.

  • International Students (in collaboration with the International Student Association)
  • LGBTQ+ Students (in collaboration with PRIDE)
  • Jewish Students (in collaboration with Hillel)

After hosting these listening sessions, we identified specific action items to improve experiences for students. We will then follow-up with the groups on our progress and continue these ongoing efforts.

Strategy #2: Introducing Pulse Polls

Pulse Polls are quick, 2-3 question surveys that are sent to students on a weekly basis as a mechanism for consistent student feedback. Students receive the poll via email and the @sa.bentleyu Instagram. Poll results are published after responses are collected.

Strategy #3: Student Advisory Groups

All students received an invitation to apply to one of two student advisory groups for the academic year.

  • Bentley in the Bahamas Advisory Group -- focused on ensuring student voices are included in decision making regarding the annual Bentley in the Bahamas trip for seniors in May with particular emphasis on trip accessibility.
  • Space Advisory Group -- focused on reviewing student spaces on campus and providing feedback to ensure that we are critically examining how we use physical campus spaces and centering students in decision-making.
