Housing Selection Information

Returning students participate in a robust online housing selection process to choose their housing for the following academic year. This process allows students to sign the housing contract, register roommates, and select from available rooms. Most returning students will participate in the process throughout February and March, while fall study abroad students will select spring housing in November and December.

I need help with...

A roommate conflict

If you are experiencing difficulty living with your current roommate, the first step is to speak with your Resident Assistant (RA). They are trained in conflict mediation and resolution, and they can help you and your roommate find ways to live together successfully. Your RA lives on your floor / in your building, and we encourage you to reach out to them with any concerns you may have. If needed, your RA will also connect with your Residence Director (RD) regarding the situation.

Requesting a room change

Our team is dedicated to helping you find the housing option that best fits your needs, based on what availability we have on campus. If you would like to explore possibilities for a room change, please contact your Residence Director. For more information about how to contact them, please click here. Please see below for our room change policy.

Room Change Policy

The Residential Center recognizes that students may occasionally seek a housing change due to roommate challenges or a desire for a new community.

Eligibility and Timing

Room change requests are considered after the two-week census period at the start of each semester, provided that space is available and all required procedures are followed.

Process

Students must first speak with their Residence Director (RD). For roommate concerns, students are expected to engage in mediation and other conflict resolution steps, typically facilitated by their Resident Assistant (RA) or RD, before a request will be reviewed. Approved requests are coordinated through the Residential Center.

Unauthorized Room Changes

Students may not change rooms without prior approval. Unauthorized moves may result in disciplinary action and/or financial adjustments, including reassignment to the original room.

Additional Notes

Room changes are not guaranteed and depend on space availability.  The Residential Center reserves the right to reassign students as needed for administrative, conduct, or facilities reasons.

My meal plan

Student meal plan requirements and eligibility are based on class status and housing assignment:

  • All first-year students are required to be on the Block 304 plan and cannot change their meal plan.
  • Students living in suites are required to be on a meal plan and may choose from the Block 304, Block 240, and Block 192 plans.
  • Students living in apartments or off campus are not required to be on a meal plan, but may select from any available plan, including Block 304, Block 240, Block 192, and Block 20.

To learn more about meal plan options and pricing, please click here.

Students are able to add, drop, or change a meal plan (depending on eligibility) via the Housing Portal. The deadline to change meal plans via the Housing Portal for the Fall 2024 semester is Friday, September 13th.

Submitting a work order

All residential students can easily submit a work order using our online system through Facilities Management. Please click here to access the work order system.

If you have difficulty submitting a work order, please contact your Residence Director.

Understanding the guest policy

Many students choose to have guests in their residence hall room. When a student lives with roommates, inviting guests to the room should involve open communication and mutual respect among all roommates. The right of a student to live in reasonable privacy takes precedence over the right of a roommate to entertain a guest in the room, and roommates should be engaging in dialogue around reasonable agreements for having guests in the room.

Overnight Guests

  • Roommates should discuss plans for overnight guests at least 24 hours in advance, and all roommates must be in agreement prior to the guest’s arrival.
  • Overnight guests may stay no more than three (3) consecutive nights at a time.
  • A student may host up to ten (10) overnight guest visits per semester, regardless of whether the same or different guests are staying.
  • If a roommate has concerns about a guest staying overnight, they should discuss those concerns directly with their roommate. If needed, they may seek support from their Resident Assistant (RA) or Residence Director (RD) to help resolve the issue before the guest is permitted to stay.
  • Guests found occupying University housing beyond the permitted time may be asked to leave campus at the University’s discretion.
  • Roommates are encouraged to discuss and set shared expectations around casual or short-term guest visits (e.g., friends dropping by). These informal visits are considered part of daily residential life and are not typically mediated by Residential Center staff unless they result in an ongoing pattern of disruption or discomfort that cannot be resolved between roommates.
  • While all roommates have a right to reasonable privacy, consistently refusing to engage in discussion about having guests over or automatically denying all guest visits may be considered unreasonable and could prompt further involvement from Residential Center to support a fair and respectful living environment.
  • All guests – both short-term and overnight – are expected to follow University policies and community standards. Host students are responsible for the behavior and conduct of their guests at all times.
